i wrote this in a message to Claire:

I’ve learnt this morning from Sam the very sad news that David has died.  He was a friend and colleague to me. He taught me a great deal and made a world class contribution to the field we worked in.  We were able to get acceptance sampling for consistency and accuracy of ammunition on a sound theoretical basis because of work he did.  You might not “get” that but it was and remains important.  I respected David a great deal.
